Exchange Programs

Collaboration Between USA and Kenya Teachers

BookBag Tours (BBT) provides educators with an opportunity to travel and get tools/experiences that change the way they teach. Our partnership over the years with BBT has brought to Kenya teachers from the USA for exchange visits with Kenyan teachers, indulgence in the Kenyan culture and wildlife. Our hope is that through these collaborations:

  • Students may get opportunities to collaborate virtually or physically with their peers in the USA.
  • Establish communication channels for potential exchange visits among teachers in Kenya and USA
  • Pursue possibilities for scholarships for Kenyan students.
  • Facilitate the international internship and volunteer opportunities to Kenyan and USA students
  • Engage in developmental issues and partnerships for our local communities.
  • Promote the rich Kenyan culture and tourist sites

Losho Primary School in Maasai Mara

The school is located at the heart of Maasai Mara in Narok county. Every year we take teachers from the USA for a session of interactions with the students and teachers giving them a different experience of a school in rural Kenya. A testament from one of the teachers sums it all up. “These past two weeks have been life changing for me. I was definitely out of my comfort zone but so worth it. I never thought I would board a small plane and travel to Masai Mara. I never thought I would travel to the Rift Valley Province in Narok, Kenya where I taught in a classroom of 7th graders at the Losho Primary School. I never thought I would be arms length away from two cheetahs chasing an impala. I never thought I would be photobombed by a giraffe or get to witness the Great Migration. I never thought I would see 4 out of the big 5 on safari in Masai Mara. I never thought I would have the opportunity to learn so much from the teachers and students in Kenya. I can’t put into words everything that has changed or enlightened my perspective on this incredible trip.”

She continues “The honor and the privilege of spending time with Losho Primary School in the Narok Village in Masai Mara, Kenya cannot be put into words. Preschool students are universally the same. I was a kindergarten teacher again singing all the songs in my toolkit. Teaching 7th grade conversational English and Grammar to students who did not want to go to recess because they enjoyed their lessons so much. I learned to take nothing for granted. Joy is in the simplicity of it all. Just thinking of their smiles, songs they performed, and stories, chills and goosebumps all over realizing what really matters in life. This experience has made me realize how proud I am to be an educator. A strong sense of humility and humanity reminds me of my why. #globaleducator #humanity ”

She summarised it with this quote: “If we continue to think and live as if we belong only to different cultures and different religions with separate missions and goals, we will always be in self defeating competition with each other. Once we realize we are all members of humanity, we will want to compete in the spirit of love.”-Mohammad Ali

State House Girls High School

One of our key partners and collaborators who have continued to host sessions of interactions with teachers from the USA and Kenya in High Schools, providing enriching experiences both between the teachers and students as well. The students get an opportunity to showcase their talents through songs and dances, art and also have a session to ask questions from the visiting teachers. The visits always leave memorable and rewarding moments for both the teachers and students.

Cherry School in Kibera

The school caters for the most vulnerable children living in Kibera whose access to basic education is a challenge. It provides humanitarian assistance and cares for the needs of children who are in need.
